Master (Primary) Bathroom Remodel | Best Spa Bathroom Ideas

Last week we discussed how big of a difference Shaker kitchen cabinets could make in your home.

As a brand new homeowner, I constantly worry about how I just signed a contract for hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, between my master bathroom and kitchen, I see the value and comfort of a home renovation.

I think for most people in general, we want to be comfortable in our most vulnerable moments. An updated bathroom with modern lighting, a steam shower, and a custom Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring will give you your own personal spa in your Master bathroom

Master Bathroom Ideas

I think I’m a little overly excited to write about how to create the perfect bathroom using our services, even for someone being paid. However, I just bought a new home and my wife and I can’t stop thinking about what our dream master bathroom would look like for BOTH OF US.

As my wife and I discussed what we liked about the bathroom, it was clear that we have to have both voices in the renovation (mostly hers).

Creating the perfect oasis means different things for different people. As you think of the ideas you might have, make sure you include a partner if you have one.

Best Bathroom Lighting for Master Bathroom

As I was house hunting this summer, there was a bathroom that I saw that had the wow factor just based on the lighting. My realtor told us that it's called a Bronze and Timber Sconce light. My idea of creating an oasis is probably much different than many others, but it should give you an idea to build upon.

Farmhouse Bathroom Lighting

Farmhouse lighting has a way of creating a warm environment with the bathroom just as much as the kitchen.

When people ask me what I consider a Farmhouse style light, I think of the craftsmanship of a metal (copper, gold, silver, bronze) frame and the elegance of the glass casing.

Normally when you see a Farmhouse style lighting system, it’s a bronze or gold metal frame hanging a single sconce-style glass.

Why Do I Like Farmhouse Lighting?

Farmhouse lighting is as simplistic as its style in cabinetry, but offers an elegance that most other lighting can’t do. Farmhouse lighting may only have a few moving parts, but its beauty is in both the craftsmanship of the metal framing and the clean bright look to the glass.

I love what a geometrical sconce light looks like with a cherry wood frame as the sun hits the bathroom. The best part about lighting, we have contractors that are professional masons, carpenters, and weldors. If you can articulate an idea to them, they will find a way to give the best custom lighting possible.

Mid-Century Bathroom Lighting

When I think of Mid-Century bathroom lighting, the big, bright glass globes and shiny metal frames come to mind.

My version of a spa has a more rustic, home vibe with a cabin in the woods kinda feel to it. Mid-Century lighting could work in a cabin feel, but it’s meant more for a modern metro vibe with light blue accent walls, shiny white tile with light color trimming on the edges.

The slick look of the Mid-Century lighting reminds me of what I think of when I think high-class in the Capitol. Mid-Century is at its best with lots of glass, straight, sharp lines, and tall glass doors with shiny stainless steel handles.

How Much Does Custom Lighting Cost for a Master Bathroom?

According to Home Advisor, the typical cost for a custom bathroom light fixture can cost anywhere between $100-$400 for the lighting.

You’ll have to add about $60-$90 an hour for the labor costs, depending on the level of customization and craftsmanship. The average cost you can expect from custom cabinets can vary from $1,000-$4,000 in labor costs from start to finish.

There are many other options to stay on the lower end of all those price points, but we’d have to know what your goals, aspirations are for the bathroom. Regardless of your budget, we pride ourselves in finding a way to work with our customers to achieve their goals.

What is a Steam Shower?

A steam shower has been my dream shower ever since I first used it at a friend’s parents house. Basically, it works by using a steam generator to produce water vapor and fills your shower like a steam room.

A steam shower is an absolute must if you’re wanting to create a modern spa Master bathroom. It will cost around $200 extra to put in a bench rest in the shower, but you’re not doing it right without a bench rest in the shower.

How Can I Save Money With a Steam Shower?

One way to still create your dream spa bathroom is to use a steam shower tub combo. If you already have a tub in your home, it’s easier for our contractors to just use the walls of the shower and seal around the tub.

Going this route could save you well over $1,000 on customization and labor fees. Sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

You can also see if your shower dimensions work with some of the prefab steam showers available (more on that below).

Why Should I Buy a Steam Shower From Monumental Contractors?

Creating a spa vibe for your bathroom takes a lot of thought and planning. There are plenty of do-it-yourself kits, but if you’re not a contractor, I’d be wary of messing with plumbing and electrical wiring.

We have the pros to ensure that your steam shower is installed correctly and the plumbing is still properly set. Besides the high level of professionalism you’ll see from each member of our team, we have some of the world's best interior designers to give you all the ideas you can think of.

How Much is a Steam Shower?

The average cost of a steam shower is about $4,300-$6,050, according to Home Advisor. There are 2 types of steam showers that most of our contractors work with, the prefab and custom showers.

Prefab Steam Shower

A Prefab steam shower is a shower that has no chance to be customized to any specifications, but will save you thousands in installation, labor costs, and demolition. I’d choose a prefab if you really want a steam room in your oasis, but don’t have $6,000-$14,000 to spend on a custom built shower.

Custom Steam Shower

A custom steam shower can include so many different levels of features that it’s difficult to pin down a  price. There is really no way of knowing which features each person is looking for, but the general consensus is between $4,000-$15,000

How Would I Build My Dream Shower?

If I had $15,000 to spend on a steam shower, I would be sure to add all the bells and whistles, such as LED lights in the floor, side walls, and ceiling. Monumental has contractors that are trained to use recessed lighting to create chromatherapy

If you’re trying to create an oasis to get lost in your steam room, using the hydrotherapy of the steam, with the LED lights and sound system is a great start. A bench rest will allow you to take the weight off your feet after a long workday and allow you to take a breath in peace and quiet while your legs rest.

I recommend asking for Marble or Granite, but our contractors have several options for each budget. Our contractors can install a waterproof touch pad in the wall to control temperature, humidity (amount of steam), and length of steam production.

To make it even more incredible, they can install an entire sound system that connects to your other Smart Home features. The spa treatment doesn’t have to be finished if you are good with spending an additional $500-$700 on adding an aromatherapy feature to the shower. This feature will allow you to use oils that diffuse with the steam to create scents, such as lavender, lemon zest, patchouli, and mint.

Finally, choosing the right type of windows and wall tiles can be a huge price swing. Ask our contractors about using certified no-slip tiles on the floor and walls. This will ensure you relax and always have good footing.

Once you finish this spa bathroom shower, you will never think of bathing the same way again. The recovery benefits for both your mind and body are noticeable within the first week of ownership. The best part about buying a steam shower is the return on investment that most homeowners with steam showers receive.

Home Advisor reports that you can receive up to a 30% increase of the value of your home from a spa shower renovation.

Best Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom flooring is often an afterthought in the bathroom, but we have more ideas for a perfect spa ambiance. Have you ever heard of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring? If you haven’t you should check out some of the ideas interior designers and contractors are coming up with.

LVP is a more expensive vinyl that can be made to look exactly like custom wood flooring. LVP is perfect for your spa bathroom because it’s 100% waterproof, which you’ll need with a steam shower.

LVP is incredibly durable and is one of the easiest flooring options to clean. Stone and tile have grout to keep up with every year, while LVP is smooth and can be cleaned in half the time.

With a custom rustic wood design, you won’t know that your floor isn’t hardwood, until you feel it. The ambiance that the look of hardwood gives the master bathroom fits perfect with Farmhouse sconce lighting with wood framing and custom Shaker cabinets.

How Much is Custom LVP Flooring?

The average cost for custom master bathroom flooring will be between $2,500- $6,000 depending on the size of the bathroom and type of design. Generally, labor costs are around $50-$75 per hour and you should expect to spend around $125-$150 per square foot for a remodeled floor.
