Renovating your kitchen can be one the best and most monetarily beneficial things you can do to your home. Every family is different, but many families spend a lot of their time in the kitchen because nothing brings people together like food.
Kitchen’s can be a beacon for gatherings and entertaining, or a place people avoid altogether. Most people hear about how expensive kitchen cabinets can be, but it doesn’t have to be if you’re flexible.
Use this blog as your Buyer’s Guide to kitchen cabinets and you’ll save money and be prepared for the renovation.
No matter your zip code or type of home, the cost factors are generally the same. First, the size of the cabinets will always make a huge difference. If you buy really big and deep cabinets, that’s more material, which will cost more.
Secondly, the quality of material matters almost more than any other factor. Our contractors can offer custom, hand-made, solid wood cabinets. But they can also give you a laminate or plywood that looks clean, sophisticated, and works great.
Finally, the level of customization done to cabinets will drive the price substantially. For example, if you were wanting solid Cherry wood with glass doors, that’s going to cost much more than an all plywood cabinet.
So, this depends on your area, but as every D.C. resident knows by now, it’s expensive to live here. We have one of the highest costs of living in the world, so everything is more expensive, for us too.
The average cost of installation according to HomeAdvisor is around $5,359, but it all depends on the style and model of your cabinets.
When you start asking different businesses about the cost of cabinets, you’re going to get a lot of the same answers.
People are going to tell you that cost depends on several factors and you’d have to give them more information if you want a more accurate quote. To make things easier you should know the 3 types of cabinets that most contractors will ask you about.
Average Cost of 10x10 Kitchen
Stock Cabinets
$100-$250 per Linear Foot
Semi-Custom Cabinets
$250-$400 per Linear Foot
Custom Cabinets
$500-$1,000 per Linear Foot
Stock cabinets are normally made from one of two materials but don’t always have to be. Normally, they’re built with a lower grade laminate or plywood.
Stock cabinets are normally one solid color with no chance to customize color, material, or size. Stock cabinets are normally pre-built and manufactured in large quantities. This is how companies save money and are able to offer a lower price.
There are a lot of misconceptions about what plywood is and its unreliable durability, but times have changed. Technology has advanced and manufacturers are able to build some nice looking, functional cabinets that look custom for right around $500-$1,500 total.
In fact, some of the most expensive cabinets that our contractors install are made from advanced processing of plywood and laminate.
Pros
Cons
As the name suggests these cabinets offer more choice in color, design, size, and shape than stock cabinets. For the most part, semi-custom cabinets only allow you to make minor changes to the cabinets, such as depth, color, and maybe size, but not always.
Semi-Custom kitchen cabinets can be made from plywood, laminate, and even some lower processed hardwood. Semi-custom cabinets offer a great compromise if you’re still worried about the budget, but want a little more essay on what you get installed.
Pros
Cons
Custom cabinets can be many things, from the material used to the measurements it’s cut to. The finishing of the cabinets is also a good indication of how custom the cabinets are.
Anytime a cabinet has to be altered in any way to fit the house, it’s normally going to be at least semi-custom work. Anytime you see 100% hardwood cabinets, they’re custom work. Some of our contractors could install stunning cherry wood shaker cabinets with a finish to prevent stains and warping in the wood. These kinds of treatments are expensive, so this is a good spot to save money if you’re okay with no finishings or just paint. The good news is that just because you don’t get the top-end furnishings, doesn’t mean you won’t get the best service.
However, if you can afford to get the best, Monumental Contractors can do that too with some stunning designs and styles.
There are some incredible carpenters in the Northern Virginia (NOVA) and D.C. area. Some of the custom cabinets are made with cherry, oak, or mahogany. They’re able to produce true one-of-a-kind artwork for our clients.
I know it’s more expensive, but my favorite type of wood cabinet is Mahogany for the chocolate tones and smooth as silk look to them. Mahogany is a very strong wood that can be carved into many different shapes and designs for even more unique features. Just keep in mind that the more customization you have the more likely you’re approaching $1,000 a linear foot, which could cost you upwards of $10,000-$15,000.
Pros
Cons
The shaker cabinet came from our European ancestors and began as a religious movement in the 1700s. The shaker cabinet, to me, is similar to the way Apple designs their laptops and iPhones.
Its design was a way for the religious descendants of the Quakers to break away from one religion to practice another. This design is simplistic and meant to be modest, but clean and sleek. Ask our contractors about Shaker cabinets and the amazing things they can do with them.
Some people like to have a glass-front cabinet because it allows them to see when they’re low on dishes and what they have. I’m one of those people that like a glass-front cabinet because of the traditional feel, and I like to see my dishes.
One thing to consider with glass-front cabinets, they’re more expensive if you use hardwood or want a special color or finish.
Stainless steel has been used in professional kitchens for decades because of its durability and resistance to liquids and abrasion. The type of steel cabinet that I would recommend if you wanted to go this route, would be a set of shelves that can hold everything you’d need for a kitchen.
Stainless steel can get very expensive for larger cabinets and shelves. Our contractors at Monumental can turn your entire kitchen into a stainless steel room, perfect for families that live in a kitchen.
One of the negatives for many people, however, is the colder feel and most of us want a family vibe in the kitchen.
