A bathroom remodel, much like any other home renovation, is a complex project that includes many steps, and that requires careful planning. If you attempt to rush this process or fail to gather all the necessary materials, you may likely encounter certain issues.
Many studies show that a bathroom remodel often takes anywhere between six weeks and three months from beginning to end. However, this timeframe may vary depending on several factors. Here is a close look at these factors.
Regardless of whether you intend to remodel your master bath or a smaller guest bathroom, the amount of time needed to complete your project will likely vary based on the following factors:
The duration of the planning phase depends largely on the scale and scope of your remodel (i.e. cosmetic or full-scale). Therefore, this initial stage may take anywhere between a few days (3 to 5 days) and several (3 to 4) weeks. During this stage, be sure to develop a solid vision for your project (i.e. how you wish for the space to be used, design patterns, etc.) and clearly explain it to all contractors and subcontractors. If you are renovating a master bathroom, for example, you should decide if you prefer to have a traditional-style design or a modern look.
Once you have finished planning your remodel, the next step involves assembling all necessary materials for the construction. The duration of this stage may vary depending on whether these materials are readily available or whether they are special-order products. If you are waiting for vanities, a new doorknob, ceramic tile, or grout to arrive, this could potentially delay your renovation by multiple weeks. This is especially true of materials that are shipped from a distant location (e.g. overseas).
As soon as you have all the tools and materials you need for your project, the construction may begin. The first portion of this stage involves the demolition of the current bathroom space, which should merely take one or two days (or potentially longer if your bathroom is located on the second floor of your home). For this part, be sure to verify that your contractor is setting up dust barriers in order to ensure that other areas of your home are protected. The next portion of the construction phase consists of the layout, framing, and backing. All electrical and plumbing work is performed during this stage (which should take approximately two days), as well as the installation of the new shower or bathtub, exhaust fans, and vents.
Once all these primary components of the bathroom have been installed, dry-wall may be added wherever it is needed. Setting up boards around certain sensitive spots in the bathroom (e.g. the shower or tub) is also recommended so that water does not spread everywhere and flood the entire room. This process should take approximately five days.
After your bathroom’s walls have been built, the tiles may be added. This portion of the remodel may take around one week or potentially longer if more sophisticated work on the drywall is necessary. The temperature in your bathroom may also likely impact the drying process. Once all tiles (including those for the floor) have been installed, all walls may be primed and painted, electrical fixtures installed, and accessories such as towel racks may be added as well. This portion should take approximately a week.
Upon completion of your bathroom remodel, your contractor will have to clean the area and perform a final inspection of the plumbing and electrical work to verify that there are no issues. As with any other home construction project, be sure to maintain frequent and effective communication with your contractor and subcontractors.
