Kitchen Remodeling Trends in Northern VA

February 1, 2021, by Monumental Contractors

You should consider remodeling your kitchen every ten to fifteen years (or more often if you desire). This is because what is “in-style” changes over the years, and your kitchen may begin to look outdated if it goes too long without a remodel. This review highlights five remodeling trends we have noticed in northern Virginia in 2021 that you may want to implement into your next kitchen remodel.

Of course, there are no right and wrong solutions when it comes to kitchen remodeling, and the best remodeling choices are based on your personal preference. However, reviewing the most common trends should hopefully give you some ideas as you start to plan your next kitchen remodeling project.

Quartz Countertops and Backsplash

The materials you choose for a kitchen determine the look and feel of your kitchen. One common trend that we have noticed is the use of quartz for countertops and backsplashes. Quartz is a naturally occurring stone that is mined throughout the world. In interior design, quartz is considered to be a high-quality material, although it is still affordable enough that it can fit within most kitchen remodeling budgets.

It has a beautiful appearance and is incredibly durable, requiring little maintenance to maintain its aesthetic properties and overall condition. It is often compared and contrasted with granite, limestone and marble. Overall, we are seeing an increase in the use of quartz that is much higher than the increase in the use of other natural stones.

Variations in Cabinet Colors

There has been a lot of innovation and change with the installation and modification of kitchen cabinets during remodeling projects. The use of traditional white cabinets is decreasing, and there is a trend toward multi-color cabinets, bold colored cabinets and darker cabinet colors. Each kitchen is unique, and considering various color options for your cabinets can help you make your kitchen more unique and less traditional.

While white cabinets have their place with kitchen remodels, there is certainly a trend toward being more open to alternative color options. There is also a trend toward the use of cabinets to cover appliances, which helps achieve more of a minimalist look for homeowners who prefer that style.

Islands With Built-In Appliances

Islands are known for making a kitchen more attractive, but they are incredibly practical as well. You can take advantage of your island by adding built-in appliances. This is a common trend during kitchen remodels and frequently requested among homeowners and recommended by remodeling contractors. You can add any appliances you desire to your kitchen island with the help of a little technology.

Also, adding power outlets to your island is a unique way to make your kitchen more practical as well. The kitchen island is also a great way to expand your storage space. Adding additional storage space with attractive cabinet doors is another kitchen remodeling trend in northern Virginia.

More Effective Storage Solutions

One of the biggest obstacles homeowners face during a kitchen remodeling project is finding enough storage space. A lack of adequate storage space or poorly planned storage can lead to appliances and other kitchen equipment sticking out like a sore thumb. As more homeowners are finding it useful to have more kitchen appliances and cooking equipment, there is an increased need for more innovative, efficient and effective storage solutions.

There are some trends that have emerged as a result of this need for better storage solutions. Notably, appliance garages for small appliances, drawer dividers, roll-out trays and caddies for pots and pans and wastebasket cabinets are becoming more commonplace with kitchen remodel projects.

Glass Walls and Doors

When many think of the traditional kitchen, they think more of a closed-off portion of the home. Rarely does one picture a kitchen with lots of access to an outdoor view. However, this is quickly changing. One common trend that we have observed based on requests from clients and recommendations from our kitchen remodeling contractors is the use of glass walls and doors. This allows the kitchen to feel much more modern and open.

Those who spend a lot of time in their kitchen often find glass walls and doors to feel much warmer and inviting, rather than the often stuffy and closed-off feeling that traditional kitchens that have not been recently updated tend to feel.
